Blackpool Magic Convention: Finding My Place Among Magicians

It's been a while since my last post and this is ultimately why. I have been working behind the scenes on my first release and preparing for the largest Magic Convention in the world.

There are certain moments in a career where you quietly realise you are no longer just aspiring to something you are part of it.

For magicians, the Blackpool Magic Convention is one of those places where that realisation can happen.

As a professional magician based in Windsor, attending Blackpool each year is both an opportunity to perform, learn and contribute to the wider magic community.

I’ve attended before, but this year felt different. I arrived not only as a performer, but also as someone stepping into the world of creation. That subtle shift changed how I experienced everything; from the lectures and performances to the conversations in the convention and late night sessions, in the Ruskin, where ideas flow as freely as the beverages.

A Convention Like No Other

Blackpool isn’t just a convention it’s a celebration of magic on a scale that’s difficult to fully appreciate until you experience it in person. Across the weekend, world class gala shows fill theatres with thousands of spectators, showcasing performers at the very highest level and reminding everyone in attendance just how powerful live magic can be.

One of the most memorable moments for me this year was having the opportunity to stand on that very stage as a participant during the gala. Looking out across a packed theatre offered a completely different perspective not just as a spectator, but as a performer sharing in an experience that represents the pinnacle of what many magicians aspire to.

Learning from the Best

One of the defining moments of the convention was watching Markobi, a World Champion, perform and lecture. His performance was extraordinary not simply for its technical brilliance, but for the way he constructed the experience. He seamlessly blended humour, moments of intentional confusion and absolute technical precision into a routine that felt effortless while remaining deeply deceptive.

It was reminder that world-class magic isn’t about complexity alone. The true mastery lies in controlling rhythm, knowing your audience, and taking risks; allowing an audience to laugh, question what they’re seeing and ultimately experience something impossible all at once.

What made the moment even more meaningful was the chance to speak with him afterwards. Despite standing at the pinnacle of the magic world, he was genuine, approachable and sincerely appreciative of the people who follow and support his work. That humility left a lasting impression.

Behind the Dealer Stand

This year also marked a personal first, working behind a dealer stand.

It may sound like a small thing, but for a magician, it represents a shift in perspective. Instead of only learning from creators, you begin contributing to the conversation yourself. You see how ideas travel, how magicians think and how shared creativity fuels the art forward.

Some of the most valuable moments weren’t on stage at all, but in conversations with fellow creators exchanging ideas, methods and philosophies that will undoubtedly shape future work.

A highlight of this experience was selling one of my effects to the absolutely amazing Alexandra Duvivier!

A Moment of Clarity

Walking away from Blackpool this year, one feeling stood above everything else: clarity.

The experience reinforced my commitment to magic not simply as something I do, but as a professional path as both performer and creator.

After more than two decades in the corporate world, pursuing magic professionally has been a deliberate and meaningful transition. Events like Blackpool don’t just inspire new ideas; they reaffirm that choosing a creative path can also be choosing the right one.

But perhaps the most important realisation was this: the ideas, conversations and inspiration gathered at events like Blackpool don’t stay within convention halls. They directly shape the performances audiences experience in the real world; refining how moments are structured, how stories are told and how impossible experiences are created for the people around the world.
