Creating Something That Was Truly My Own

Joining The Magic Circle is something many magicians aspire to.
It’s recognised as one of the most respected organisations in magic and in order to join you have to earn that membership.
Recently, I was accepted as a Member of The Magic Circle (M.M.C.), performing a parlour act that was entirely my own.
And that last part meant everything.
An Act Built From Scratch
For my audition, I made a decision early on:
I didn’t want to perform existing material.I wanted to present something that reflected who I am as a performer.
The result was a full routine built around a central idea, taking the audience on a journey through music, using magic as the storytelling device.
Every element of the act was original.
The routines
The structure
The presentation
And even the props: four of which I created specifically for the performance
That choice made the process significantly harder. There’s no safety net when everything is your own. But it also made it far more meaningful.

Not Guaranteed
One of the things that makes The Magic Circle special is that acceptance isn’t automatic.
You’re not just showing what you can do, you’re being evaluated on how well you do it.
That pressure forces you to think differently:
Is this engaging?
Is your magic competent?
How is your stage presence?
Does it connect?
It becomes less about “doing tricks” and more about delivering a complete structured performance.
Music Meets Magic
One of the strongest pieces of feedback I received was around how original the act felt, particularly the way it blended music and magic into a single experience.
That’s something I’ve been developing more intentionally. Not just performing magic. Not just playing music. But combining both in a way that feels seamless and engaging.
There were moments in the performance that really stood out. Opening with a line about being their musician for the evening, before realising I was “double booked” immediately set the tone and got a great response.
Later, producing guitar picks(plectrums) and transforming one into a jumbo version created a moment of surprise that landed exactly how I’d hoped.
Those moments matter. They’re where the performance becomes memorable.
A Step Forward

Becoming a Member of The Magic Circle is an important milestone. But more than that, it represents something larger. It’s a step into the community of performers and creators who are actively contributing to the art.
For me, it reinforces the direction I’m continuing to move towards:
Creating original material. Blending music and magic whilst building performances that feel unique, engaging and personal.
Looking Ahead
This is just one step in a much larger journey. But it’s one I’m proud of, not just because of the outcome, but what it means for the future and how its just the beginning!
